If you want to try authentic Yucatecan food, reunited in one place and enjoy the proverbial friendliness of the yucatecan, Hacienda Teya is the place you should not miss during your visit to Mérida.
The history of the Hacienda San Ildefonso Teya begins in 1683, when it was founded by Doña Antonia Ildefonsa Bermejo Marcos Calderon and Helguera, who was wife of noble and august Conde de Miraflores. Erected during the colony, the first two centuries of prosperity of this estate were due to livestock, the cultivation of corn and other agricultural work; in the nineteenth century becomes henequen hacienda after a few years to be destroyed and abandoned with the changing times.
In 1974 a new stage for this historic property, to be acquired by Don Jorge Cardenas and his family, who after years of work and dedication become a reference when speaking of Yucatecan food and an example of conservation of the historical heritage of Yucatan. San Ildefonso Teya is now a favorite of many visitors and personalities, artists, heads of state and even royals like Queen Sofia of Spain for example.
In Hacienda Teya you can try from subtle lime soup that is a true poem to the strong flavor of the Queso Relleno, one of the most difficult Yucatecan dishes to achieve but here one of the specialties of the house, through the Poc Chuc the Cochinita, Longaniza de Valladolid (as in Valladolid it self) and Yucatecan dishes, from the simplest to the most elaborate … weekends can find specialties such as deer steak, soup or Tzic (shredded). The desserts make this place famous; house flan, ice cream, “Poor Knight” and other classic Yucatecan have made this restaurant a favorite of the meridians.
Teya also functions as a hotel and has rooms and gardens, restored the former glory of the place, where events such as weddings, baptisms etc. are held Well worth taking the camera and go explore this beautifully restored hacienda, stroll along the corners full of history and enjoy a relaxed evening among deer and peacocks spend time feeling as can only be done in the quiet Yucatan area.
